Total Daily Energy Expenditure (TDEE) is the total number of calories your body burns in a 24-hour period, accounting for everything from breathing and heartbeat to exercise and daily movement. It is the most important number in nutrition science because every successful dietary strategy — whether you're trying to lose fat, build muscle, or maintain your current weight — ultimately depends on how your calorie intake relates to your TDEE.
Unlike BMR (your calorie burn at complete rest), TDEE reflects real-world energy output. It has four distinct components: BMR (60–70% of TDEE), which covers organ function, body temperature, and basic cellular processes; NEAT (Non-Exercise Activity Thermogenesis, 15–20%), which is all unconscious movement like walking, fidgeting, and posture; EAT (Exercise Activity Thermogenesis, 5–10%), your deliberate workouts; and TEF (Thermic Effect of Food, ~10%), the energy used to digest and absorb what you eat. All four sum to your TDEE.
Knowing your TDEE eliminates calorie guessing. Instead of following generic advice like "eat 2,000 calories per day" — a number designed for an average person who doesn't exist — you can set a precise, individualised target. A 5'4" sedentary woman at 55 kg has a TDEE of roughly 1,600 kcal. A 6'1" male strength athlete at 95 kg may have a TDEE of 3,400 kcal. These people cannot use the same calorie target and expect the same outcome. Your TDEE is uniquely yours.
TDEE is not a fixed number. It changes as your body composition, weight, and activity levels change. Most people experience a gradual TDEE reduction as they lose weight — because a lighter body requires fewer calories to move and maintain. This is why calorie targets that worked initially may stop producing results after several weeks, and why recalculating every 4–6 weeks is essential for sustained progress.
