Basal Metabolic Rate (BMR) is the number of calories your body burns in a 24-hour period to carry out basic, life-sustaining functions while at complete physical, mental, and digestive rest. These functions include keeping your heart beating, lungs breathing, kidneys filtering, nervous system communicating, and core body temperature regulated. Essentially, BMR is the absolute minimum energy required to keep your body alive if you were in a coma.
Your BMR typically accounts for 60% to 75% of your Total Daily Energy Expenditure (TDEE). The remaining portion of your energy burn comes from moving around, exercising, and digesting the food you eat.
