A protein calculator is a tool designed to estimate your daily protein target in grams. Protein is one of the three primary macronutrients, alongside carbohydrates and fats. It is composed of organic chains of amino acids, which serve as the fundamental structural building blocks of human life. Protein is required to build and repair muscles, organs, skin, hair, connective tissues, and to produce hormones and enzymes.
Unlike carbohydrates and fats, the human body cannot store protein for future use. While fat is stored in adipose tissues and carbs in liver/muscle glycogen, amino acids must be regularly consumed through your diet to satisfy daily turnover demands. If dietary intake is insufficient, the body will catabolize (break down) its own muscle tissue to secure the amino acids needed for survival.
Determining your protein requirement is the most critical step in body composition planning. When you are in a calorie deficit (cutting), consuming adequate protein preserves muscle mass, ensuring that the weight you lose is fat. When in a calorie surplus (bulking), protein provides the raw material needed to synthesize new muscle tissue. Additionally, protein is the most satiating macronutrient, helping suppress appetite during fat loss.
Our calculator uses a sports-science-based approach, calculating LBM using the Boer clinical formula and applying specific target multipliers: 1.2–1.6g/kg of LBM for maintenance, 1.6–2.2g/kg for muscle gain, and up to 1.8–2.4g/kg during fat loss to maximize muscle preservation.
